#Ashton Kutcher's "The Beautiful Life" lives on YouTube

The Beautiful Life will air five episodes on YouTube – and if it's popular enough, it could live on.

We know that the Internet can build a TV show’s buzz, and sometimes even keep it from getting canceled. But can it bring one back from the dead?

We’ll soon find out: A recently canceled show has come to YouTube.

The Beautiful Life, a drama about the New York modeling scene, met a swift end on the CW early this season. The show had the misfortune of going head-to-head with Glee, the Golden Globe-nominated breakout hit on Fox, which competes for the same young demographic. After managing just 1.4 million viewers for its first episode and 1.1 million for its second, the CW gave The Beautiful Life the ax.

But here’s the twist: One of the show’s producers is Ashton Kutcher, a.k.a. the most popular guy on Twitter. (He has 4.1 million followers.)

Kutcher is determined to bring the show back. It helps that he’s more connected than the average producer, and those connections have given The Beautiful Life another shot at, well, life. With some funding from Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) and distribution help from YouTube (GOOG), Kutcher’s Katalyst Media plans to post a total of five episodes of The Beautiful Life online and keep them there for six months. (Three episodes are up already, with two more coming next week.) If the show draws enough engaged viewers, it could live on – either as an online-only show or back on TV.

“We spend months if not years on a product. We put it out on the television, we let the viewers vote, we get our ratings. If it doesn’t work, we throw it away and start over with something completely different as opposed to tinkering and tweaking and changing the program,” Karey Burke, head of television for Katalyst, told FORTUNE. “What’s exciting is to think about taking a program like this that has a very short shelf life and giving a chance for the brand to live.”

Why did HP underwrite the project? Larry Nelson, HP’s director of digital strategy, said the non-traditional approach is a good fit with HP’s technology brand – and HP is already spending half of its marketing budget on digital. It helped that HP was launching its “Create Change” program that allows shoppers to donate 4% of the purchase price to a charity when they buy directly from HP.com – The Beautiful Life offers HP a chance to see whether it can get fans of a broadcast-quality online show to buy HP products, visit HP websites and generally engage with the HP brand.

If HP can figure out how to make all that happen, it’ll be a beautiful thing.

5 Best #YouTube Sports Moments of 2009

Click here to find out more!

by: Jalen Rose

http://mashable.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/jalen_rose_fab_five.pngWith 2009 coming to an end, I thought I would take a look at some of the year’s best sports moments in social media. This week, I’m talking about YouTube videos. Each of the following sports moments was captured on video and uploaded to YouTube for all of the world to see. As a result, millions of people have watched these videos this year. So, without further ado, here are my fab five YouTube sports videos of 2009.

1. Trick Shot Mastery

The only thing missing is the whistling from the Harlem Globetrotters’ theme song! This took a tremendous amount of practice, no doubt. Amazing shot after amazing shot with style, flair, and oustanding range! Shaq actually challenged this young fellow to a game of H-O-R-S-E after seeing this video.

2. Vijay Singh Hole in One

I’m no golfer but I wouldn’t suggest trying to emulate this shot. I don’t think golf balls are made to skip off water. Either way, Singh managed to pull off one of the craziest sports moments of the year, and perhaps one of the craziest golf shots of all time.

3. Hardest Hitting 6 Year Old

This youngster puts the “pop” in Pop Warner football! He blows up plays like he was shot out of a cannon. Watch out for this future all-pro in the making — he’s NFL bound!

4. Women’s Soccer: New Mexico’s Elizabeth Lambert

I certainly don’t support the kind of behavior exhibited by the young lady in this video. However, the footage of New Mexico’s Elizabeth Lambert punching, tripping, and pulling the hair of her opponents is a video that has swept across YouTube (and mainstream media) in the last month. Whether I support her actions or not, I have to admit that this video was one of the most memorable sports moments of 2009.

5. Usain Bolt Sets World Record

bold-record

Usain Bolt is a machine. This was one of the most spectacular moments in all of sports this year, and maybe ever. Racing against a group of world-class sprinters, Bolt dominated his “competition” and set a new world record in the process.

Honorable mentions: Lebron’s Playoff Buzzer Beater, World’s Longest Basketball Shot, Manu vs. Bat, Crazy Georgia U. Fan

It was hard to narrow down my list to just five, and I know I missed some great sports moments from this past year. Which video that I did not include most deserves to be there? Add your picks in the comments.

#SKATING BABIES: #YouTube Video Ad Campaign Enters Guinness Book

http://cdn.mashable.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/roller-babies-260.pngYouTube and the web have provided a new and powerful medium for video and TV commercials. The great ones can go viral, resulting in millions upon millions of views.

MSI’s Acrobuttocks commercial, Microsoft’s MEGAWOOSH and Windows 7 ads, and Evian’s Roller Babies immediately come to mind.

Out of the thousands of commercials that have gone viral though, the skating Evian babies video has accomplished something none of the others have: it has broken a world record. Last week, the Guinness Book of World Records officially declared Roller Babies the most viewed online advertisement in history.

Utilizing data from Nielsen and YouTube, Guinness has concluded that, through November 9th, Evian’s break-dancing infants have racked up a total of 45,166,109 online views worldwide. It’s even more amazing when you realize that this ad campaign was exclusive to YouTube. 45 million views for a critically acclaimed commercial that millions remember and actively discussed worldwide? We think any brand will take those numbers.

More companies are realizing the power of social media to spread a message on the cheap. That’s why we think this record’s destined to be broken sooner rather than later. Here’s the commercial if you want to immerse yourself in the sheer awesomeness of dancing babies:
